A growing political and religious storm surrounds Tamil actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay after a fatwa was declared against him by a top Sunni Muslim cleric.
Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi of Bareilly criticized Vijay for allegedly offending Muslims through his portrayal of the community in Beast and his controversial Iftar party on March 8.
Sunni Muslims in Tamil Nadu filed a police complaint, accusing the event of including non-fasters and creating an environment disrespectful to Ramadan. The cleric urged Muslims not to associate with Vijay in any religious context.
This controversy raises serious concerns about religious sensitivity in politics as Vijay attempts to shift from cinema to leadership through his party, TVK.
